This clipped article, People Power is a book review on a book which studies the formation of democracies. It perhaps elucidates my various thoughts on game theory and democracy, that I've gone on about from time to time (separately).
There are obviously other ways to institutionalise concession-making through power sharing, with a relgious organisation, aristocracy (e.g., the Magna Carta), or army (e.g., modern Turkey) taking the place of the electorate.
One cheerful thing about the review is that it suggests a causal link between the development of a middle-class and democracy, and development of a middle-class goes hand in hand with urbanisation, the number one third-world demographic trend!
